Introducing Jazz Guitarist Charles Gatschet |
|
|
Charles Gatschet is a lifelong and dedicated musician. His studies began at nine years of age, on the violin, but the guitar took its place in 1971, at the age of eleven. There was no need to force him to practice guitar, since he knew from his earliest memories that he loved music and had to be a musician. By his late teens, Charles had planted himself amongst veteran jazz musicians in Kansas City, Missouri and there he cultivated relationships that helped him realize his style. The musicians he performed with include such jazz originals as Baby Lovett, a popular drummer from the 1930s, Buddy Anderson, a trumpeter and pianist with the Jay McShann Orchestra and contemporary of Charlie Parker, Claude "Fiddler" Williams, the original guitarist for the Count Basie Orchestra and jazz violinist, Jimmy Witherspoon, the jazz and blues vocalist, and Carmell Jones, the brilliant post-Bop trumpeter. Currently, Charles performs with such jazz notables as Bobby Watson, Danny Embrey, Kim Park, and Luqman Hamza. Over the years, Charles also studied theory, arranging, composition, and improvisation extensively with John Elliott, a renowned musician and instructor, and classical guitar with Doug Niedt, one of the world's finest classical guitarists. Composition is a primary focus of Charles' work as can be heard on his new CD "Reflections", which is made up of eleven original songs. Stylistically, he draws from BeBop, Brazilian music, blues, classical and country music, the music of India, and sounds from nature and culture. |
